Choosing the Right Fire Pit for Your Space

Every garden is different, so choosing the right style, size and fuel type can make a noticeable difference to how you use your outdoor area. Some designs suit relaxed evenings with friends, while others are better for cooking or adding a focal point to smaller patios.

By Fuel Type and Style

  • Wood-burning fire pits: Ideal if you enjoy the traditional crackle of a log fire, natural flames and the option to cook over embers. They are often available with a range of purpose designed cooking accessories such as planchas, grills and swing arm BBQ racks, allowing you to turn your fire pit into a wood-fired BBQ.

  • Gas fire pits: Clean burning and easy to light, with a consistent flame and very little maintenance. These work well as a centerpiece for social gatherings, with the flickering flame creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for relaxed evenings under the stars. They are available in a range of sizes and styles from simple fire bowl designs, to larger table style designs with space for drinks and nibbles.

  • Bioethanol fire pits: Stylish, modern and smoke free. All the benefits of a gas fire pit but with an even cleaner burn. Bioethanol is a naturally produced and renewable energy source made from plant by-products, so they are the ideal choice for the environmentally conscious.

Fire Pit FAQs

Are fire pits legal to use in UK gardens?

Yes, fire pits are generally allowed in UK gardens as long as they don’t cause a smoke nuisance. Burn only dry, well‑seasoned fuel such as kiln-dried wood (e.g. ash, birch, oak, etc), or approved smokeless fuel, especially if you live in a Smoke Control Area. Always site your fire pit away from fences, sheds and low branches, and never burn household waste.

Can I use a fire pit under a pergola?

It depends on the type of fire pit you are using.
Wood-burning fire pits should not be used under a pergola or any covered structure, because the smoke, sparks and heat create a clear fire risk and can damage the structure.
Gas and bioethanol fire pits may sometimes be used under a pergola, but only if the manufacturer’s instructions specifically allow for covered or semi-covered use. These models produce clean flames but still require plenty of ventilation, safe clearances and a non-combustible surface.

What size fire pit is best for my garden?

Small spaces: Wood fire pits with a diameter of around 50–60cm work well on compact patios and courtyards, giving a comfortable level of warmth and cooking space, without overwhelming the area. For gas and bioethanol models, look for smaller fire bowl designs in the 60-80cm range.
Medium spaces: For wood fire pits, models in the 60–80cm range suit most outdoor seating and dining areas. For gas and bioethanol models, larger fire bowls and medium sized tables in the 80-120cm range work well for most seating areas, providing plenty of heat and ambiance for most occasions.
Large gardens: Wood fire pits 90cm and above make a strong focal point and project heat further, ideal for bigger gatherings or wide seating layouts. Gas and bioethanol models of 120cm plus make a bold statement and are ideal for larger seating areas.

Should I choose a wood, gas or bioethanol fire pit?

Wood-burning fire pits are a great choice if you enjoy the traditional crackle of a log fires, the natural flame pattern and the option to cook over embers. They give the strongest heat output and suit more open outdoor settings.
Gas fire pits are clean, convenient and easy to control. They ignite quickly, require minimal maintenance and work well on patios and terraces where you want a consistent flame without smoke.
Bioethanol fire pits offer the cleanest burn of all, with no soot, ash or smoke. They are often chosen for their modern, refined look and the relaxed, intimate atmosphere they create. Bioethanol tends to produce a gentler heat than wood and can be more expensive to run, but it is environmentally friendly and ideal for contemporary outdoor entertaining spaces.

How do I care for a steel fire pit?

Our steel fire pits are designed to be low maintenance; they can be kept outdoors all year round and do not require a cover (although we recommend using a suitable lid to keep rain and debris out when not in use).
Mild steel fire pits
Mild steel fire pits naturally form a protective rusty patina when exposed to the elements. This is part of the intended aesthetic and will not affect the fire pits long term durability. They can be ‘cleaned up’ by brushing gently with a wire brush and then rubbing over a thin layer of any type of oil, however, this is not required. After each use, allow the bowl to cool and empty the ash. Store lids and accessories somewhere dry and keep the fire pit off grass or non heat resistant surfaces to avoid scorch marks.
Corten steel fire pits
Corten steel behaves differently. It is designed to weather and form a stable, rust-coloured surface that protects the metal beneath. The bowl can be left outdoors year-round, and the finish will deepen over time. Simply remove ash once cool and avoid leaving it sitting in water to help maintain the surface.
