An outdoor fireplace does something a fire pit cannot. The fire sits in a chamber with a flue above it, so the heat comes forward towards you and most of the smoke is drawn up and away. That makes a fireplace a natural focal point for a patio or seating area, giving you warmth on a cool evening as well as a fire to look at.
What is in the range
The collection brings together five brands, and they divide into three kinds of fireplace.
Open outdoor fireplaces
BonFeu makes the widest choice: nine freestanding steel fireplaces with a chimney, from the compact BonSolo up to the BonTon for larger gardens, in Corten steel or black coated steel. Most come with a spark screen and a grill grid, and three have a rotating grill that turns in and out of the fire, so you can cook over it too.
Adezz Forno fireplaces are permanent centrepieces: sculptural Corten or black coated steel designs, several with storage for stacked logs, from the compact Stig to the larger Enok, as well as the Digna, which shows the fire from every side. The GAP combines a fireplace and a pizza oven in a single piece.
Enclosed outdoor log burners
If what you are looking for is an outdoor log burner or a garden wood burner, start here. The Firebloom Fresco Plus is a wood-burning outdoor heater with glass on all four sides, so you get a 360° view of the fire from every seat and the controlled burn of an enclosed stove. The BBQube HeatQube is the same idea in a different shape, a wood-burning heater with a glass-fronted door, available as a built-in version or on a wheeled base. Enclosed burners are designed to burn efficiently and keep smoke to a minimum.
Chimineas
The Firepits UK Piazza and Piazza Junior are chimineas handmade in Britain from steel, each with a swing arm BBQ rack. They are the choice for a smaller space where you want warmth and somewhere to cook without giving the patio over to a fireplace.
How to choose
Start with what you want the fire to do. If you are after a substantial, permanent piece that becomes a centrepiece of the garden as well as a source of heat, look at the Firebloom Fresco Plus and the Adezz Forno fireplaces. If you want a fire to sit beside and cook over now and then, the BonFeu range and the chimineas give you more choice.
Then think about where it will stand. A flue draws most of the smoke upwards, but an open-fronted fireplace such as a BonFeu will also let some smoke out of the front, so it will not keep a seating area completely smoke-free. If that matters most, an enclosed log burner is the better choice. If the fireplace will stand under a canopy or a covered roof, you are likely to need a flue extension that takes the flue out through the roof, so speak to us before you order. An open lawn or a large terrace can take a bigger, open design, or a fire pit instead.
Then the finish. Corten steel weathers to a rust-brown patina over its first few months outside, after which it needs very little looking after, though we do not recommend Corten steel within 2km of the coast. Black steel suits a more modern scheme. BonFeu's black steel will rust in damp conditions, which gives it a robust, weathered look, and scratches can be touched up with a can of heat-resistant BBQ paint. The Adezz Forno black models have a heat-resistant coating and come with a touch-up spray.
A few practical points. Sit any wood-burning fireplace on a flat, stable, heat-resistant base such as stone, brick, gravel or a slab on decking, because grass will scorch. Corten steel sheds rust as it weathers, and the run-off can stain decking and patios, so a slab or a plate underneath protects the surface. And burn dry, well-seasoned wood, because wet or green wood is what makes a fire smoky.
Delivery is free on UK mainland orders over £500, except for Firepits UK products, and the larger pieces come on a pallet and are delivered to the kerbside, so it is worth having a second pair of hands on delivery day to move your fireplace into position.
